A lot has been said about Microsoft’s founder and one of the richest people of America. William Henry Gates the third was born in Seattle, Washington, to a middle-class family. As a youngster, Bill was a competitive and ambitious child, curious and passionate about books. At the age of 11, his parents started noticing he was bored with the regular school program and enrolled him at Seattle’s Lakeside School.
His interest in programming began when he was 13 years old, at the same school where he would met his friend and future Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen. Together they began working on programs in their free time. By the age of 15, Gates already wanted to go into business with his pal, Paul. Instead, his parents pushed him into graduating from college and then enrolling into Harvard law school.
Both Gates and Allen ended up dropping out of university. They became fascinated with the Altair; a mini-computer made by MITS and started developing software for it; which is how Microsoft was established (Micro-mini computer, Soft-software). They continued writing software for other companies as well, and at the age of 23 Gates was already the head of Microsoft, a company of 25 employees which grossed $2.5 Million USD by that time.
Soon cooperation with Apple Computers led him into developing software that resembled one Apple had for their Macintosh line of computers, called Windows. Windows was announced to be in development stages 2 years before it was actually released to the public. This brilliant marketing move represented Gates’ exceptional business and marketing skills. By 1986 at the age of 31, Microsoft’s IPO (initial public offering) made Gates a millionaire, which quickly turned him into a billionaire, and the rest, as they say, is history.
